Hi Debbie,

I think I'd be inclined to see if your friend can help locate some CPU
temperature monitoring software to establish if the CPU is in fact
overheating.

Also, if you are able to check the event logs for the time of a failure, you
might get some clues there.

I have seen systems begin to overheat when something like Windows Defender's
scanning process kicks in, especially if you are running other applications
at the same time. I usually tell mine to scan overnight.

George.

Hi George

yes it has all been cleaned. The fans are working but there is space for
another fan so we were wondering whether we got another one and wondered if
that might help.

Hi Debbie,

Have you had someone sighted check to see if there is a dust build-up round
the fans? This is one of the most common reasons for a system powering off.

It it's a desktop, it usually pays to have the case opened, and gently clean
it out with a hoover. Laptops are trickier as you cannot really open them
up easily, so it's a case of sucking out what you can.

George.

Hi

Thanks to a wonderful friend my computer is now alive again and luckily I
didn't lose anything.

I want to keep this computer running for a few more months until I can
afford to buy a new one early nest year.

Regarding Service Pack 3? How can I stop it from downloading and is it
necessary to download it?

We still haven't got to the bottom of why the computer switches itself off
so don't want to risk it downloading again.

Could I do it via disc instead?

Thanks

Debbie
