I agree. I use it all the time, but I don't make noises with my tongue
though! (smile.) I can work out parked cars, approaching doors or walls,
alleyways between shops as landmarks, bus-stops, posts and other large
obstructions. You need to be tuned in for it to work though, I would hate
being without the ability to use it.

I certainly can and can pick up overheads a lot of the time also. I can also
hear walls as I'm crossing roads and approaching the pavement.
I do think it's a skill that one can acquire, ears allowing, and is probably
seen most in those who have been blind for a long time.
One thing that we do is to pause and listen whenever we drop something.
This enables us (most of the time) to find the item dropped.
BTW: When out with a cane, I use the rolling tip so don't make my cane echo
by tapping, particularly, though I do tap it on surfaces occasionally to
heck out things.
