Sadly you're labouring under a bit of a misapprehension there. There are no
batteries in the unit when you get it. The reason for this is that it doesn't
use batteries. It is mains dependent. It is still great fun and worth having in
my opinion.
I don't think you need to install the IOS/Android app but if you don't download
it you do need to use the PC app instead. I occasionally use the IOS app but
not that often. I did use the IOS app to set it up but it was quite awkward as
the instructions weren't that clear. Unfortunately I can't remember what screen
caused me the most difficulty.
If you bought it yourself then it will already be registered to you but if it
was bought by someone else as a present then there may be an extra step or two.
I bought myself the Dot but now have the Echo as a Xmas gift and am about to go
on that little voyage of discovery.

Hi all, like doubtless many others i was given an Echo Dot for Christmas. I
plugged it in last night to charge and it lit up and I�ve plugged it in again
now and it has lit up once again However, as the supporting documentation out
of the box is so limited I wondered whether someone could answer these basic
questions please?
1. Does the dot work without being plugged up to the mains?
2. I�ve tried powering it up when not connected to the mains but cannot figure
out how to do this. Which button turns it on?
3. Is a more substantial manual available from amazon?
4. Will the Dot do nothing if it has not been associated with the downloadable
app?
5. Has anyone managed to set theirs up using the smart phone app as i know that
others have had trouble doing this.
