Hi guys,
If you are cloning a disk as a replacement in the SAME machine, you should not
have a problem with Windows licensing, drivers or any such thing.
It is only when you wish to install the cloned drive into a different system
altogether that you will likely open a can of worms.

If you are going to clone it is literally that, an exact copy of the current
disk meaning that it makes no odds what state the disk of the new laptop is in
at the point you do the cloning.
There are a copy of things to bear in mind:
The windows license is likely to be linked to a particular motherboard or hard
drive serial number particularly if the laptops have come from some of the
bigger manufacturers. This means that there is a chance that Windows will not
be activated when you clone it to the new hardware.
The second consideration is dissimilar hardware. This CAN trip some cloning
software up. Also there is the question of drivers. Drivers are not the bane
of Windows that they used to be but some video drivers still seem to cause a
problem.
I recommendation would be to clone the new laptops drive before doing anything
at all, this way you will always have that to roll back to.
In terms of software I would strongly recommend Acronis, if you want a free
open source alternative try Clonezilla. I am not sure what the accessibility
is like of either of those solutions but maybe someone else can comment on this.

I've just ordered a new HP laptop and intend to change the 128Gb Windows disk
for a 500Gb SSD.
Am I better to clone the Windows 10 onto the new formatted disk before the
first run of Windows, or once it's been run and has a basic setup?
Suitable cloning software recommendations would also be appreciated.
