Excellent news, Mo, thanks. I didn't realise that disk management would
expand an existing partition. Will it do it on a partition when it's running
windows, or would it be better to do it in a caddy so as not to affect the
windows installation as it's done? 

So using the hardware disk cloner looks like it will be the easiest way
ahead.

Yes, both tools should be able to clone the partitions and resize them 
to fit the available space. In the worst case scenario the tool doesn't 
do it's job which is very unlikely, windows has a built in tool called 
disk management that you go in to and you can expand the partition from 
there to fill the disk. I have done this when partitions have been 
cloned but not resized and it's worked very well in most cases. If you 
clone your disk using your stand alone device, you could probably expand 
using windows disk management saving yourself some money buying image 
for windows which is my preferred tool.

partition
be cloned onto the 500Gb disk without it creating a 128Gb partition on it
and rendering the rest of the disk space inaccessible? I have used image
for
windows many years ago but only for restoring a backup to the original
disk.
I also have a disk cloning device which you plug in the two disks and
press
the button and off it goes, but this will reduce the 500 disk to a 128
disk
as it will replicate the partition table and you then lose the rest of the
disk space - I know as I've done this by mistake before!

I would Set it up first, then clone to the new disk. macrium reflect or
image for windows from terabyte unlimited should both do the job for
