Yes I agree and if I go for a Mac at some point I will be looking at it.

Apple also have an online refurbished store giving cheaper deals while still providing a full warranty. Just thought it'd be good to know, I know refurbished isn't for everyone.

Hi Carol,

Unfortunately, although the Mac OS X is very good Apple's pricing is on the expensive side. Their cheapest laptop is £749.00. However, if you only invest in laptops then it might be a good buy for you as you are getting speech out of the box for the same price as you would pay for JFW.

Also, there are some definite advantages to having a laptop that has all parts and software created by one company - such as all hardware and software work extremely well together. However, it can be harder to get your Mac fixed as you cannot simply go to any PC store. You could fix your Mac yourself, it is apparently easy enough to do but this is something that Apple discourage.

On the software side however, the Mac OS X is compitable with Windows and there is a lot of accessible software for Voice Over - the Mac Screen Reader. In fact, an advantage to have a Screen Reader built directly into the operating system is that it is far easier for developers to make their applications work with Voice Over without the need for special scripts.

I hope this helps a little

Take care

Gordon,

I found that article interesting.

So, if I go into a shop selling an Apple Mac, I can have speech out of the box right away? At what kind of price?

I'm getting interested now, though I wouldn't say keen to throw out all I've learned so far or to pay heavily for new gear.
