Well RNIB have quite a lot of techy gear on display, but there is so much that you couldn't have every single item on show, and RNIB are in bed with certain suppliers, of that there is no doubt. I fancy Alva isn't one of them, so contact Optelec and ask for a demo.Alternatively, Terry Clasper could demo you one as they also deal with Alvadisplays. I'd certainly hate to be without mine I can tell you.I'll try to be a bit more specific about why I like it too. The feel on thedisplay, between cells, is lovely and clean. There is no roughness, nocoarseness between cells, and it makes them stand out very crisply, yet not so they will hurt the pads of your fingers. And because of this very smoothsurface between dots, it makes for long reading, and that is important if you are proofreading a large document or something. I also like Optelec's after-sales, and their serious approach to Braille generally. For them it isn't just an add-on to something previous, it's there, right in the middle of what they do. I think Braille people will understand what I mean. Good luck anyway. I am definitely going ahead with it. A friend of mine told me that in the USA the National Federation of the Blind has a centre where all products are on display, not for sale just to look at. I think we should push for one of these in the UK. The latter is the one I have. It is far superior to any other display I've used before, and I bear no disrespect to those that have gone before me. The Alva runs on USB or Bluetooth. It is also plug and play, you just hook it up to your PC, turn it on, and it is recognised. It also works brilliantly on the Mac. You can do things like split the display so half of it reads say your Word document, and the other half could say read what your phone says. If you aren't sure, contact Optelec at www.optelec.co.uk Kind Regards, Jackie Cairns -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of jeff flint Sent: 03 October 2011 22:27 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Alva Braille Displays Have decided to get an eighty of the above, only to discover that there are two, the new one, to me, is the "satellite."
