On a day to day basis, people don't actually discuss consciousness  all
that much.

If we go beyond direct discussion of consciousness, then look at
epistemology.  It is said to be a theory of knowledge.  If it is a
theory of knowledge, why isn't it the underlying theory from which
teaching methods are derived?  Why do schools of education prefer   more
constructivist approaches
