Poked around a few spots on the south end of Horicon Marsh today - pretty quiet
overall. Had a few Tree Swallows by the Int'l Education Center off Hwy 28, and
there were lots of Canadas and a few ducks in the impoundment, but not much
else. Checked out the Green Head Rd. boat landing (thanks to Dave Schrab for
directions) and had a decent variety of early migrants, including a couple of
E. Phoebes, a No. Harrier and lots of Song Sparrows. Also checked to see if
Dike Rd. was open yet - it's not (except for hiking; the gate is still closed
to cars so they can grade the road, hopefully soon.) I cruised down Northern
Rd. instead - not real birdy, but I was pleased to see someone had picked up
and bagged all the trash. There's hope yet for humanity...

On my way back to Madison from Oshkosh, I took the scenic route through Green
Lake and Marquette Counties. It was disconcerting to have everything so green
and leafing out, with hardly any birds around save for a few Turkey Vultures
and the occasional Crow. Like others have stated, this is making me
exceedingly uneasy...

Back to birding... I also checked a few spots in Columbia County on the way
back. Schoeneberg Marsh has a bounty of ducks yet, both dabblers and divers.
Only thing new from yesterday that I noticed was a single drake Common
Goldeneye. There was a large flock of blackbirds along the gated and abandoned
former Lynch Rd. (off Priem Rd. - they removed the street sign when they turned
Lynch into a walking trail.) The flock was roughly half Red-wings and half
Rusty Blackbirds. Many of the geese were leaving Goose Pond by the time I got
there, so I barely slowed down. Harvey/Wangsness had 27 Greater White-fronts,
but most of the Canadas had gone farther east just before I arrived. There was
one Lesser Yellowlegs in with all the Snipe and Killdeer.
