I spent a good part of the morning birding Horicon Marsh, mainly along Hwy 49,
with a quick run on the Auto Tour Rd (quiet). The ponds along 49 were very
good, especially earlier in the morning. I totaled 14 shorebird species,
mainly on the pump house pond, but they are now bringing down the pond on the
north side of 49 too, that included 2 Stilt Sandpipers (breeding plumage), the
pair of Black-necked Stilts feeding on both sides of 49, both Short-billed and
Long-billed Dowitchers (only a few of each), plus more standard shorebirds for
this time of the summer (fall) migration. Excellent numbers of Great Egrets
were noted (about 350), White Pelicans and along the exposed mud on the north
pond of 49 at least 30 Sora plus a few Virginia Rails.
If they continue to bring these two ponds down as the summer/fall progresses,
Horicon Marsh should be excellent for shorebirds and other water related birds.
On another note I went up this past Saturday morning to Almon CP south of
Rhinelander. Like Kay and Bob on Friday, I did not find any Am. Three-toed
Woodpeckers. John Rasmussen appeared while I was there and he had the same
result. Actually it was very quiet bird wise.
