Hey Rod, The global catalog server holds the global catalog. This is usually the first DC that you install AD services on. The global catalog in turn holds frequently used info such as first and last names, login names, etc. The global catalog is used to locate objects throughout the network without having to replicate all the domain info between domain controllers. Cuts down on lookups in the source domain. List, Please correct any of the above if needed. Thanks! HTH PS I'm a rookie too so don't feel bad. ;) Ron -----Original Message----- From: windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Rod Falanga Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 10:09 AM To: WINDOWS2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] global catalog servers and domain controllers, etc OK, here's another ignorant question. As I've mentioned before, I'm now = the system admin, and I don't have that much experience at it. My = former boss, who was the system admin, made up a PowerPoint document = detailing the servers on the network, their relationships and primary = functions. On only one of them, he write "Global Catalog Server". = However on a few others he wrote "Domain Controller". Now, all of these are Windows 2000 Servers. We have Active Directory on = the system. What is the difference between a global catalog server and a domain = controller?=20 =A0 Rod Falanga http://amci.unm.edu ================================== To Unsubscribe, set digest or vacation mode or view archives use the below link. http://thethin.net/win2000list.cfm -- Binary/unsupported file stripped by Ecartis -- -- Type: application/ms-tnef -- File: winmail.dat ================================== To Unsubscribe, set digest or vacation mode or view archives use the below link. http://thethin.net/win2000list.cfm
