[windows2000] Re: global catalog servers and domain controllers, etc

The Global Catalog is a stripped down version of the entire directory.
Certain fields of all objects are stored on all the Global Catalog servers
in a given forest.

Global catalogs are required to log in. If you machine cannot find one when
you log on, you will not be able to log on (unless you have cached
credentials, but that is another chapter).

I would definitely make at least one other Domain Controller into a Global
Catalog server, so if the one that you have goes down, your users can still
log in.

I tend to have at least two in each site, and make them DNS servers too,
since the other thing you need to log on is valid DNS...

Hope this helps,

Hey Rod,

The global catalog server holds the global catalog. This is usually the
first DC that you install AD services on. The global catalog in turn holds
frequently used info such as first and last names, login names, etc. The
global catalog is used to locate objects throughout the network without
having to replicate all the domain info between domain controllers. Cuts
down on lookups in the source domain.

List, Please correct any of the above if needed. Thanks!

HTH

PS I'm a rookie too so don't feel bad. ;)

Ron

OK, here's another ignorant question. As I've mentioned before, I'm now =
the system admin, and I don't have that much experience at it. My =
former boss, who was the system admin, made up a PowerPoint document =
detailing the servers on the network, their relationships and primary =
functions. On only one of them, he write "Global Catalog Server". =
However on a few others he wrote "Domain Controller".

Now, all of these are Windows 2000 Servers. We have Active Directory on =
the system.

What is the difference between a global catalog server and a domain =
controller?=20
