Hi Tony,

Now I see where you
are coming from. two remotes for two set top boxes and one remote control for the TV. Tony, As I said I'm no expert but if you could ask a friend as to how they control the tv from the set top box remotes I think if you achieved this it would reduce the number of remotes and the confusion as to which remote to use. As I mentioned before I think the procedure to control the tv from the set top box is something like pressing the home key which is on the top left of the remote control while holding down the TV button which is beside the set top box button, this causes the set top box to scan for the model number of the tv in its in built databank of tv sets models. so when it finds the model of your tv, it will turn it off and you will have to switch it on again by pressing the tv button on the remote. The beauty of this is that you will be then able to control the volume sound and changing channels from the set top box remote rather than going for the tv remote. You should be able to do this with both set top box remotes. If sighted help isn't readily available to do this maybe you could scan the remote controls facing them down on the scanner attached to your pc and saving the image and calling each file by the remote controls reference: "soarview remote control" and "sky remote control". Then send them to me off list and I will see if I can make out what the buttons are. Forget about looking for the manuals, email sky Ireland and ask them the procedure of: "How do I control my TV functionality from the sky remote control"

regards

Apologies Gerard for delay in reply to your note or 3rd April. When I got
around to switching on the tv with with the sky remote, my 3rd one, it
struck me that one or other of the threee devices in use --- tv set,
saorview box or sky box had gone to sleep rather than being prokperly
switched off as should be the result of the use of the tv remote.
I have not found guides to the various parts. They are probably filed with
other household equipment, manuals for stereos, washing maching machine,
etc.
The sky box has seven buttons approx but the saorview box is so black or
grey it very hard to distinguish the background.

Hi Tony, After having a test run on the bush boz08 set top box and thinking
about your problems might I make a few suggestions
even though I'm not fully acquainted with your set top boxes. using your
origional text I'll add in my suggestions.

On another matter related to Saorview, would any member be able to assist me
with using Aertel from within Saorview? I use binoculors or a type
prescribed bor the task However I cannot switch to Aertel once Saorview is
selected.

Firstly Tony, you mentioned that you have 3 remote controls. I take it 1
each for the set top boxes and 1 for the tv. Would you check out something
for me. In the set top box I was using there were 3 buttons on the top of
the remote control: from left 1. home 2. TV 3. S.T.B.(set top box)
Do you have similar buttons on both set top box remotes? if so, the remote
control has the capability to control the Tv. To avoid having to use the
T.V. remote as well. You should get someone to read the instructions from the user manual guides from the individual set top boxes just to make sure.
In my circumstances. using the remote control of the set top box I was
instructed to hold down the tv and home buttons on the set top box remote
control which would initiate a scan by the S.T.B. remote control to check if the code for the t.v. was in its memory bank. on finding it the home button flashed twice and the tv switches off and I was instructed to press the O.K. button so when I pressed the tv button on the S.T.B. remote control the T.V. would come back on and the volume and channel changing could be done from the S.T.B. remote control. Now my instructions may not be totally accurate but it is something like that. I had success similarly some time ago, with one of those universal remote controls you can buy off the shelf for t.v.'s. So at least if I am correct you can just use the 2 s.t.b. remotes for changing channels etc and switching on/off the tv.As regards the teletext, if you press the teletext button when the soarview s.t.b. is being used and the teletext comes up, when finished with it , you should just have to press the home button once or twice to bring you back to the tv screen. the way I interpret this is that it is like when you have a
number of documents or programs running on a computer and they are
overlapping each other on the p.c. screen. If on the other hand you can't
get up teletext on the screen maybe it is because it depends on the channel,
has tv3 aertel pages, select r.t.e. 1 tv and press the teletext button. If
at this point it doesn't work maybe as I said before your signal needs
checking out. I gathered from my own experience that there is an option in
the s.t.b.'s main menu to locate such info and when you do you can contact
soarview and ask what's wrong.

Further I have found it unwise to liave the Saorview environment temtorarily to access Aertel due to the lentht of the set-up procedure to get back into
Saorview.
*try out what I said above.

I am one of the chaacters with two boxes, one for Saorview and the other for
foreign freeview and radio and a toggle at the top right bubbon on same
tabkes be between the two systems.

Another problem with Saorview is that the sound on the transmission
frequently disappears. Increasing the volume control makes no impact. The
following day it may work.
* I think you should checkout the strength of your signal and also try to
keep the two set top boxes well apart as we all electronics they seem to interfere with each other if too close together. For instance occasionally when I leave my mobile phone next to my p.c. it interferes with incoming calls which I only notice when I take the phone away from that spot. Also, when using a close circuit magnification tv, I attempted to put credit into my ready to go phone using the cctv to read the phone credit slip, as I rang the niumber, the screen started to incur rolling lines through the screen and when I moved the phone away from the cctv and fingered in the numbers with the speaker on the screen cleared and I was able to read the numbers. Ensure that there are no cables
crossing as this is one thing I discovered that causes break up of signal.

Yet another query I was was about to put to the Saorview phoneline shortly
is how to set the tv so that the time will self adjust for winter and summer
time. My set keeps to GMT all year year around and is very strange to
compare with the new time of day this week. It was giving me the same
trouble last summer but when I realised what was up I stopped checking the
tv time
* I wonder even with the problem of setting up the time with the t.v.'s remote if you could as mentioned above link the remote control of the s.t.b.'s to control the t.v. functions and went into the mainmenu on the s.t.b. maybe you could make the correct selections that way maybe it would keep the time better. These are only suggestions and I hope they help. Back to my origional question, have you a video recorder linked to your t.v. or do you use built in hard drive or a portable hard drive to record programmes? best of luck.

Gerry,

Unfortunately the RTE channels aren't available on Freesat. The RTE feeds
come from the same satellites as the versions on Sky, so they're encrypted.

To get accessible both Freesat and Saorview / Saorsat you'd need 2
separate boxes as far as I know. A Panasonic Freesat TV with voice guidance
for Freesat, and an accessible set-top-box for Saorview. I doubt very much
that Panasonic will produce a TV set with both platforms, but you may wish
to do some research to verify this.

As per the Youtube video Joan Ann posted - it appears that the only menu
which works with voice guidance on the Panasonic TVs is the TV guide / EPG. Speech isn't provided in any of the set-up menus, which I expect would rule out accessible PVR functionality (if it's included in the specifications at
all). Again have a look at the various specs to verify this.

Have a look at

You may find this forum on boards.ie useful - it contains a truck load of
information on Saorview / Freesat.

Hope this helps,

Ciaran

Ciaran, Are the r.t.e. radio and TV channels available now! on the Freesat
platform, I know there was some breakdown in negociations some years ago,
Thus I don't know the situation presently. Also, is there a record option
in the menus of these panasonic tv's i.e. if you attach a usb stick or hard
drive will you be able to record programmes?

Correct Dónal - these TV sets will only speak the EPG on Freeview in the UK,
and Saorview in Ireland.

However, I believe there is to be a Freesat model, so this will work in
either country. Freesat doesn't carry the subscription channels we all love
(hate?) and know from Sky and UPC though. That said it's a very popular
platform nowadays, so these sets will represent a great way of getting
accessible multi-channel telly in the ROI.

A channel list can be found on the following site:

Been doing a bit of looking at this. For anyone with Sky or UPC it will
*not* read the EPG on those services as far as I know. I'm most definitely
open to correction though and hope I'm wrong.
