Hi Gerry,

My knowledge of what Saorview offers is very limited I'm afraid, so I'm not
sure that my explanations below will be much use to you.

Firstly, if I didn't have an iPhone, yes, I could schedule recordings with UPC,
using their website. There are some accessibility challenges but it can be
done, with a little bit of time.

On UPC, if I decide to record a programme that is just starting, I can hit the
record button, and then press the enter key to confirm that I do want to record
the programme. The next question asks whether I want to record just that
programme, or if it is part of a series, the entire set of shows. I had a
friend talk me through the prompts so I have learned to anticipate what the box
is asking me, at least for those functions that I use often.

Once you begin recording with UPC you can switch to another channel and your
recording will continue.

Finding the programme you have previously recorded can be a bit of trial and
error sometimes, and I have often been searching around for up to 20 minutes
before I get to what I want.

The most accessible option, if you had the money and time to set it up, would
be a windows media centre box connected to your TV, with Jaws or your screen
reader/magnification package of choice installed.

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi Stewart,

have to admit the iphone does it again. It looks as though the iphone
cabibilities makes it a personal necessity for vips as regards being a
conduet to accessing inaccessible situations. If you hadn't a iphone,
would you still be able to manipulate the menus to select record a programme
and move to another channel. Stewart, besides your situation, from what you
know of the technology in general: if you were only using soarview, what would
be the options to facilitate the present analogue situation converting it to
digital - presently, I've got my ariel plugged into the video v.c.r. and then
connected ariel feed from video from v.c.r. to t.v. - If I think of purchasing
an approved soarview box, It will either have to include a player with record
function and hard drive/usb memory stick connection included or a connection
point on the box where the v.c.r. can be linked in. Then there is the option
of attaching the v.c.r. directly to the tv which more recent tv sets contain.
p.s. is there an iphone app for soarview to do as you do with u.p.c.

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I can only answer a very small part of your mail below, and I don't think my
answer will be of any use to you, as I understand it you are not a customer
of UPC, but if you are, and if you subscribe to their Digital Plus package,
you can use their newly released iPhone app to programme the box to record
TV from anywhere. You can also record one channel and view another, use live
pause, rewind etc.

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi Tony,

I couldn't help but collapse laughing, after considering your previous
problems and now see your email whereupon you said you had three remote
controls - I'd get so confused and frustrated that I'd take on a basil
Faulty outlook on digital TV and have a game of darts with the remotes using
the tv as the dart board - I thought we had problems already! (this is
going to be a long email as I have a few questions of my own to add at the
end of my suggestions)

Sorry, Can't help with the Soarview - Aertel problem, Is this a service
issue as you said, you can't switch to aertel when soarview is selected.
I'm only surmising, isn't aertel a menu option within the soarview menu,
actually when I was testing a set top box I was instructed to press the home
button twice on the top left hand side of the remote control to return to
the channel I was viewing but this was only while in the programme guide,
might this work for you?

On the sound issue, I think you might get a fully sighted friend to go on to
the soarview website and check out your nearest digital booster station, Now
remember you can't take it for granted that because your original analogue
signal was fine that you take it for granted that the new digital signal is
the same. R.T.E. have set up separate digital booser stations for
soarview, on this point: it is said that the best wway to judge your signal
is to check out the quality of picture and sound on tv3.by a fully sighted
person and if it is somewhat dodgie or snowie you should have a tv service
person adjust your roof top ariel to get the best quality signal as you roof
top ariel may be slightly out of synct thus causing the lapse in signal..
Alternatively get a digital rabbits ears aerial for convenience to pick up
the soarview channels. This issue could be caused by a number of problems
signal etc. When checking out the set top box I had some problems with the
signal breaking up but to my consternation I realized that it was my own
fault leaving flexes coiled or crossing from ariel and power flexes
crossing.

Is the option for adjusting summer/winter time an option in the time menu
Tony? Now here's a question for you Tony, How do you record programmes?
If you have a conventional video recorder, you'll need a fourth remote
control(I'm about to pull my hair out) - but really to put the question out
there, Anyone who has a sorview set top box or a customer of U.P.C. or a
customer of Sky, how do you record programmes and watch another channel at
the same time presently? The only solution that I know of presently is to
record via your analogue channels and watch the digital station unless you
are the possessor of a new version sky box which has a hard drive for
recording. The real issue presently for me is the fact that as explained to
me that the digital signal can't be split and only one channel can be
received at one time so how can one record a programme on a different
channel and watch a programme on a different channel? This initself poses
the question of which set top box to purchase even if you are only in
soarview land. One has to be very shrude and aware of the set top boxex
capabilities. If it has a single conne
ction for your tv or a double connection for the tv and video or hard drive
which is associated to an encoder in the set top box that will provide for
your requirements. Just because there is a usb socket does not mean that it
willfacilitate a hard drive, it might only mean that it will play music,
films and photos from a hard drive or memory stick - so many variables, so
confusing, has anyone some answers??

As regards your query on resetting the soarview setting, yes I do concur
that unless you had a talking set top box this would be impossible for a
totally blind person except if there was some kind of hot key i.e. like a
auto search button to reset the stations. but even this could take a deal of
deftness as you would have to listen for sound and press o.k. button At
this point, I'd like to mention that I have just did a trial of the Bush
boz08 talking set top box for N.C.B.I. with a certain degree of success alas
there are some short comings because it originates in Southern Hemisphere
Australia/New Zealand and I'd like to make a presentation of this on the
list later on. Maybe even include a w.ma. file of the help screen which
describes the functions of the keys on the remote control. But I want to
speak to Mark first.

Alas, we have a long way to go yet to make set top boxes and so called
accessible tv actually work for visually impaired people. Gerry

To Gerard, Ciaran and friends.

Further to my my despatch of 27th March, while having two boxes I have three
remotes so the problem arises if someone else goes straigt into the analogue
stations but this may be obviated next Novemember with their closure. I
operate by the spates of the remotes and the location on them of certain
controls.

I am a loss to know how a completely blind person could reset the Saorview
setting.

Yours,

Tony Roche
