I absolutely loved Particia McConnel's new book For the Love of a Dog, and
how she describes the different body language of our dogs, and what the
behaviors associated with them are.

it was fun, a very good read.

I had the same thoughts at first.
I have seen dogs that have been taught this behavior very effectively. I
have heard of no adverse effects... When in a calm, relaxed, down position I
am not sure that a tail held close to the body would effect an emotional
response of any kind. While standing the behavior is requested for short
segments of time (passing a low shelf, or entering a door, etc) and
reinforced and praised in a positive manner. This would make me think that
it would very little to no effect negatively.

There is a discussion group where a some animal behaviorists congregate and
discuss many lofty subjects...smile... I like to read the threads and I
learn a lot. I have to say that some of it is way over my head. However, I
love reading the information shared there, I learn a lot, and they often
post links for studies that are available on the internet. I will post this
question and see what they have to say about your intriguing question.
