I'm no expert by any means but I'm not sure that's correct....... I'm pretty
sure I used Drive Image when I installed a new hard drive and below is a
excerpt of the blurb from Powerquest. I think Norton Ghost would do the same
thing and many others most probably.

there is no program that will make a backup for your whole drive... a backup
will most cases back up the system files...and then you need the program on the
new drive to tranlate it to the new drive and if new drive is blank.... well...

best you can.. then install new drive as a slave.. fdisk and format etc... and
then copy the c drive to the new drive and after copying check to insure was
copied all ok.. or hope it was.... then redo jumpers as to what one is slave
and master making the new one the master and hopoe it will boot all ok... then
check out all data has been transfered all ok.to make a complete copy of your
drive you need a drive image...... and when going to a new hard drive then
makes a difference again.... even making a copy all the way usually will be
problems due to new boot sector and if bigger drive then new paramaters of the
new drive compared to old drive.... to simply swithc out a drive to "repair" a
system that is giving you headaches by installing a new drive and copying it
all over will not correct your origianl problem.... still going to be there on
the new drive,just transfered is all... especially if not a bad drive....
using the drive maufactuers programs for drive testing they will tell
you for an accurate and percise check of its condition it will require
destruction of the data conatined.. do you want to continue with test... and in
doing so it then will identy sectora that are badand so note them taking them
out of play.... to see this in action.. go out and buy any drive you wish brand
spanking new and place it in your pc and do the manufacturers testing.. you
will be suprosed at the numebr of BAD sectors it picks up but they are already
idnetified as being bad and not accesseible by any programing.....
best program I have found to check and work in drives is spinrite5
form gibson research... but..... it requires you to be using DOS only to use
it.... and can be very tricky in doing so and attemtping to recover any data
contained on the drive.....and. if is NTSF.. its a whole new ball game then and
aint even going to touch it as am still trying? to muddle thru what the heck
that file system does and how it works,even tho using it on one xp pro box and
have to since is one machine with a dvd burner.... so I would absolutely make
sure my system works first... as near perfect as can be.... then.... use a cd
burenr and imaging software to make the copy and having it bootable..... in
that way should be able to just about make a good working system with a new and
bigger drive... but again... is it really a bad drive and not sme other jumbled
program or settings?........ been thru it.. spent the money.... and now have me
a few drives laying around on hand have found to be in perfect opreating
condition....now if only couple mother boards and cases... have me a few back
up boxes to play with..... lol.........chuck...in Ok
