Yesterday morning at Shelby Park, Nashville, TN, I drove to the loop on top of the hill overlooking the Naval Reserve for some warbling. I spotted a Blue-Headed Vireo, Palm Warbler, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, and Tennessee Warbler. There were likely others there, but I didn't have much time, and don't know all the songs yet. While watching a female (yellow) tanager in a tree at the top trying to see if it was a Summer or Scarlet Tanager, I noticed another a few away from it, and scanned that direction with my binoculars. I quickly noted a buffy red head on it's yellow body, but then another bird dove at it and they both flew off to another tree. The female hung around another couple of minutes. I didn't know to look for the wing barring for an ID, but the reddish head doesn't leave much option but Western Tanager. My bird book says they can be casual in the east in winter. I hope to return soon in case they are still around.
