A couple of things that Jay omitted:

We found a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO along Hwy 79 west of Great River Road in
Lake Co. This species has nested along this road in the past. The bird
flew across the road right in front of us from south to north very low
(less than 3 feet) to the ground, but we were unable to relocate it.
The steady, strong south winds that we encountered all day likely
contributed to our difficulty. I have GPS coordinates for this
location; email me privately if you would like them.

We were able to stimulate a LEAST BITTERN to call repeatedly over the
course of 30 minutes at the Handicapped Hunting Area of Black Bayou WMA
(Lake). We were never able to coax it out of hiding.

We spent a few minutes listening for the BELL'S VIREO behind the
pumphouse pond at Black Bayou but did not detect it; again, this may
have been attributable to the wind and not necessarily indicative of the
bird's absence.

The shorebird habitat at White Lake WMA (Dyer) is as good as I have ever
seen it; and the potential for even more appears to be almost limitless.
With its extensive, flat mudflats that are already low on vegetation,
and its existing system of dikes, this refuge has the potential to be
one of the finest shorebird/waterfowl anywhere in this part of the
country.  Let's hope the managers avail themselves of the opportunity;
certainly, it would be a tremendous feather in TWRA's cap if they could.

Lastly, and disturbingly, at the Phillipy ponds (Lake), a dead GREAT
BLUE HERON and CATTLE EGRET in close proximity to one another would seem
to suggest that they were shot.
