Birders,
Today we had a "Pink-sided Junco" feeding on the ground in our back
yard. We are long-term birders and we do not think we have ever seen one
like this unless we were just not observant enough and did not see the
difference. We always have Juncos in the winter and did when we were
living in Virginia also. Today we had several of the usual ones - either
grey and white or black and white. When we first saw this one, we both
asked each other, "What is this?" It is distinctly different. The Naional
Geographic Field Guide describes it as follows: "Breeding in the central
Rockies, has broad, bright pinkish-cinnamon sides, blue-gray hood and
blackish lores." We have seen the "Oregon Junco" and the "Yellow-eyed" in
the West, but this one is not one of them.
We would appreciate knowing if others see this bird where you live and
is it more common than we think. We would love to hear from you. Thank
you very much.
