TN-birders, Clyde's email isn't news to anyone who has spent any time at Ensley, aka "The Pits", or with Jeff. But, I would like to reiterate his sentiments = to those who haven't had the pleasure of experiencing both the location and = the birder who has spent so much time there over the years, studying = shorebirds. I make it down to Ensley several times a season if possible during = shorebird migration, as the looks and variety there can't be matched at any = remotely close location. I am fortunately close to several other great shorebird spots along the Mississippi and KY Lake, but none match Ensley for = either numbers, variety, or the ability to get great looks at the birds, so you = can really study the plumages, etc. Once again, for most this won't be news, but being in the field with = Jeff is always a rewarding experience. His knowledge and passion of all birds, = but especially the beloved "wind birds", is immediately apparent in the 1st = few minutes you spend with him. Jeff's attention to detail, and the ease = with which he passes it along, has to be experienced to be believed. I've = been able to spend a lot of time in the field with Jeff over the last few = years, and picked up a lot of details along the way that I probably wouldn't = have otherwise. =20 Thanks to Clyde for reminding us once again, what a great thing we have going in Memphis at Ensley Bottoms! Granted, it's too far to be a = regular trip for everyone, but everyone should enjoy the thousands of shorebirds spread across these flats on occasion (some just feet away). Most = weekends you won't be alone, as Jeff obviously goes through these birds on a very regular basis, so keep an eye out for the Ol'Coot as well! Good birding!! Thousands of shorebirds. I lead a Chattanooga Chapter field trip to Kingston Steam Plant the week before and saw only about 15 individuals = of on 4 species. 2. That some of the birds were so close you could study individual = feathers with your binoculars. If you thought you "had to have" a scope to study shore birds, not here. A scope is needed to see the distant birds, but = many could be identified without. The way the roads go around the pools you = can drive right up to the birds. Unlike Kingston, where I logged 2.5 miles = on my pedometer. Also Kingston is an afternoon hike because the orientation of = the sun to the birds, which translates HOT! =20 3. The variation in plumages of the same species, adult, immature, = molting individuals.=20 4. Eight Baird's Sandpipers in one day, Seven in one pond as we scanned = thru the mix. 5. Mottled Duck In Tennessee. 6. Jeff's knowledge of his "Wind Birds", and his willingness to share = this knowledge to all who are interested. =20 Clyde Blum =20 Signal Mountain, Tn (near Chattanooga) =20 Sequatchie Co. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3DNOTES TO = SUBSCRIBER=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx -----------------------------------------------------=20 To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx=20 with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society=20 Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group. =20 Moderator: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN wallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * = =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
