Hi Erik, This statement isn't 100% accurate but is close enough (exceptions include things like folder redirection). There are major differences between "managed" and "unmanaged" policies. Disregarding machine policies for this explanation, "managed" user policies manipulate registry values/keys under HKCU\Software\Policies or HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies. "Managed" policies are transient so if a policy is removed the changes induced by the policy disappear. However "managed" don't do everything we need. "Unmanaged" policies are basically your NT 4 style policies where a policy changed an application (or Operating system) registry value. If the policy is removed, the changes stay so an "unmanaged" policy has to be reverted (put back to the original setting) before it is removed. I feel they are a mandatory alternative to reg hacks using .reg files etc because in win2k3, if registry editting is disabled, regedit -s won't work either. You can still use Vbscript, Kix etc, but policies are neater. Microsoft distiguishes between "managed" and "unmanaged" policies in Gpedit (GPMC uses gpedit as well). Gpedit doesn't normally show unmanaged user policies. So you will see an empty folder when you add one to your policy template. However if you right click a folder under administrative templates > view > filtering > "Only show policy settings that can be fully managed" (Windows Server 2003/Winds XP, win2k slightly different) you will see the unmanaged policy folder contents. Here's what I did: copied and pasted text in new .adm template, added template in GPO: result: empty folder under computer configuration, administrative templates copied and pasted text in system.adm, under user settings. result: empty folder under user configuration, administrative templates. Maybe I can also make this work by adding a VisualFXSetting value of 0 under HKCUSoftware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects (using the logon script)? This value doesn't exist, however, so I'm unsure about its relevance.
