[THIN] OT: Schema modification? or no?

Getting conflicting statements from 2 vendors...
Do you need to modify the Active Directory schema to add an address space?
For example, to add the address space "FAX", do I need to update our schema?
Can someone provide solid documention (MS Article, etc) that states this?
