[THIN] Lagtime in Microsoft Office

What variables should be looked at when end-users are complaining about
lagtime in Microsoft Office products? For example, John is typing a
document and looks up and nothing he typed is there and then in a moment it
catches up to him.
Any help would be most appreciated.
