I understand those Factory made bateries have the Tabs "sonicly" Welded
together.

Subject: [TechAssist] Welding tabs on batteries

Hi folks,
I just took my ailing laptop battery pack apart to see if I might be able to
rebuild it. Looks like it uses standard Li-ion cells and I've found a
source for the cells. Looks like tin or stainless steel foil strips about
1/4" wide welded to the ends of the batteries. Anyone have any idea how to
weld the new batteries in?
It looks like two small spot welds about 1-2mm apart on each tab. I'm
visualizing two probes about that far apart pressing the tab against the
battery and passing enough current between them to weld the tab on.
I'm wondering if one of those old weller soldering guns could be used if
I made a set of probes to fit in place of the regular tip...
