Its done with a small spot welder. Local retailer called Battery Specialists uses one to make up battery packs to rebuild obsolete battery assemblies. A spot welder is a little more sophisticated than appears. There are four adjustments on the welder: Pressure. The tips are spring loaded against the work and the pressure at which the current is turned on is adjustable; Current. Usually transformer tap changing or something like a Variac; Time. The length of time that the current is allowed to flow; Hold Time. The length of time that the pressure is held after the current is turned off. Spot welding works best on metals with high electrical resistance. The battery tabs are usually nickel.
