$250? WOW. The last one I did was a pity job on a Saturday morning, about 15 miles from my shop, for a guy whose kids were driving him nuts while his wife was gone for the weekend. I don't normally do those calls on Saturday but I felt sorry for him. Besides I had one left out of a box of ten, that I thought I was going to have to cook up for supper sometime. I paid for being such a nice guy though, as in "no good deed ever goes unpunished". His check bounced. Since it was over a hundred dollars ($165) I had the choice of a civil action in district court (lots of paperwork and slow), or criminal action through the local police department, (usually they pay right away to avoid being arrested). I left the bad check in the hands of a detective at the police department in his town. I called them several times over the next few months to find out what was happening. The final answer was that he either wasn't home, or wouldn't answer the door, whenever they went to his house and they couldn't find him. I then went for the civil action and sent the required certified letter. The day I got the return receipt post card in the mail, I got a money order in the mail for the full amount. Looks like the mailman was better at finding him, than the police department.
