Jerry Anything mechanical that would affect the timing could be at fault. It could even be slight wear and tear on a number of mechanical parts where individually each is not that bad but taken as a whole add up to problems. with a VCR after spending that much effort on an intermittent, do you really want to take a chance and proclaim it fixed if it works 4 times in a row or say 6 times , 10 times, it will likely be back biting you. With what a replacement is worth and what your time is worth is it worthwhile taking the chance on a vcr that has a fault that is not straight forward. Just wondering. Have a good Columbus day.
