I am not familiar with this problem but have you tried deep mechanics 
sockets? They are available in single units to replace stripped and broken 
sockets in sets. They are usualy over 1 1/2 inches long.

If you go to Sears they sell an open package type item that can be replaced 
on its package and returned for credit if it doesn't work.
