Mode switch related problems can cause the mechanism to get out of time. JVC camcorders had a lot of problems started from cracked solder joints at the mode switch connector. The mode switch can get damaged and teeth on the lower side of the gear driven by the loading worm gear can easily get damaged. So you usually end up with more than one problem to fix.
