Boy I could have saved my money and used my nose instead of the meter.

Excellent notes, Ken.
I would add that caps that physically leak electrolyte often test fine
for ESR as well, as do caps with high DA. We use the smell test a lot
for leaky caps (heat the legs and smell for bad tuna) and careful visual
inspection. As for DA, the only way that I know of to test it is with
the Sencore units and swapping caps.

Three points of caution for techs new to using as ESR meter.
1) An ESR meter will not show a shorted cap.
2) A bad cap could check as good if it is in parallel with another cap
that is good. When you find parallel caps, one must be floated.
3) A cap can have a good ESR, but low in capacitance.
I have an analog meter like you describe and a Dick Smith. I prefer the
Dick Smith, because it is more rugged and accurately measures low-ohm
resistors, like common off the emitter of a HOT or in convergence
circuits.
The best advice I can give is to know your test equipment AND its
limitations. My Fluke DVM and Dick Smith ESR are my most used "helpers."

Bill, you know how when you are testing a power supply for surge, and
you "buzz" all the low ohm resistors with your ohms meter looking for
any that are open? You usually put your ohm meter on low ohms with the
continuity buzzer and go from one to the other. You are basically
glancing at the meter for a good low ohm reading to look for any
"opens". Low,equals a good fusable resistor. That's kinda how you use
this ESR meter. A healthy, good lytic passes the meter's test AC signal
right thru the probes, thru the cap and you get a pretty much full scale
reading. Any bad lytics with weak electrolyte will offer resistance to
the test signal produced by the ESR meter. This shows up as
a high reading. Low impedence is good, high is bad. It tests the
internal health of these lytics. It's fast. You will get the "feel" of
it soon enough. I love mine.I can "buzz" right thru a whole bunch of
vertical caps in a minuite and fine the suspicious ones. 99% of the time
it's correct.
Have fun.

In answer to where I bought it. I bought it at MAT Electronics from
their Summer Clearance Sale catalog SS905. The salesman quoted me $49.95
and I told him it said $45.00 in the book. I think he thought I said
$35.00 and he said OK.

Mat Electronics sells this model for $50. Where did you get it for $35?

ESR Meter

=A0=A0After all these years the old TV Man has bought a ESR Meter (El
Cheapo).
=A0=A0The website shows a picture of the meter. When I place the 2
probes across a capacitor the needle goes all the way to the right.
Anyone seen one of these meters?
