In Australia too, the green man on the side road runs parallel to the main road (sometimes starting earlier to give pedestrians a 'head start'), but drivers all know that when turning they have to give way to pedestrians, and they do look out for them and give way. If there is an accident they are responsible and they know this. I do not think this would happen in this country. Drivers will never be that courteous!
