Graham,

I too was in Normandy last week.
I noticed a massive increase in zebra-type crossing markings but as you've
found, most drivers don't cede priority unless you jump out in front of
them. Those that do stop stare at you when you hesitate as if to say "what
are you waiting for - get a move on".
It did make me wonder whether the French know what the French system is.

Last weekend I ambled round Caen in Normandy dodging in this case, (since
they drive on the wrong side over there)  right turning cars while I crossed
road junctions clearly displaying a green man. I assume this was the
flashing amber in action. If so the drivers did not care to cede priority to
peds, and being not used to it, I found it somewhat hairy.
Does anyone know whether the French use the system, and if so, what the
accident rates are like ?
