Yes there was a problem of the general public continuing to cross even when
the green to traffic has begun, and I would agree with Bruce that low
vehicle numbers is probably a large contribution
to this.
Certainly when it was proposed in Poole we had a fair amount of
communication with the Government Office whose main concern was the non
operating of the audibles.

You may like to talk to Dft about this as they are not very keen on this =
type of crossing. I don't believe it is recommended at stand alone (mid =
block) puffin crossings as it goes against the short green invitation to =
cross followed by an extendable all red.
I also believe that resting on green is likely to result in people =
ignoring the red man as they 'know' the crossing is on green so will just =
cross any way.
This happened a lot with the crossing Lee mentioned in Poole and we have =
similar problems with a crossing in Bristol, although this is probably due =
to the low numbers of vehicles using both of these crossings (both are bus =
and access only).=20
As the crossing in Bristol had a considerable accident problem than I =
would risk assess this type of crossing throughly before going down this =
route. Resting on all red might be a safer way of achieving similar =
results as at junctions this can make the junction safer rather than more =
dangerous.

We have had a suggestion put forward to us that would it be possible to =
allow a pedestrian crossing to rest on red to traffic, i.e. reverting to =
the pedestrian stage as the normal mode of operation.
Does anybody do this, or has anyone even trialled this?
