I always get ragged on a bit for towing the Rivi around. But if it weren't being towed in 2004 neither of my parents would have been able to travel with me.

Not Mother's day, but...

In 2003 my youngest brother died. My mom packed my grandmother up and moved to Alabama so she'd have her sister to help take care of her (my legally disabled brother [broken back, many surgeries] had the grandma duty before he died).

Less than a month after moving Mom was diagnosed with cancer. they did some cutting and some chemo and thought they had it.

In April 2004 While I was talking to her on the phone I told her I had my dad convinced to leave his house for a whole weekend to go camping and see a car show. She didn't believe me and had to see for herself so she drove from Alabama back home to Texas and the 3 of us went to the first Texas VW Classic together. Rained like hell that weekend. Their air mattresses were floating in the Westy tent.

And we all had a great time.

A bit later in the year I talked my Dad into joining me a kid that lived down the street from me (for whom I took a Greyhound to Illinois to pick up a bus he bought on the Internet) for a weekend campout that was right here near the house. Chiggerfest No rain. Great time. I still have scars.

Then, I had to make a decision. Go on my annual Jerome trek or go the opposite direction. I talked to mom again and was discussing the possible trips and she said "If you go to West Virginia you have to come right through Huntsville (AL) right?"

Decision made. I packed up, hitched up the Rivi and drove to Alabama. Picked up Mom and we went to John Brown's Buses in Harper's Ferry, WV. Cold, a little wet. Good fire, good music, good people.

Once again, she had a great time.

2004 was a good year.

Mom wanted to come for the Classic again in 2005 but she relapsed and went back into the hospital in April, 2005. She was still there when Dad went into the hospital and straight to intensive care from the emergency room on June 1st, 2005. Mom died June 2nd, 2005. Dad died June 13th, 2005. We got whacked by Hurricane Rita September 24th 2005. But that's all OK.

2004 was a good year.
