If this is the case this is starting on the right track. They should put the dog and owner under evaluation for say 6 months also. The Leon Co.officer assured me the owner would be cited and fined. That is what I want, so he really knows his dog is a danger and it doesn't happen again. I willonly know over time how Santino will react to other dogs. If he needsretraining, I and GDB will expect the owner to cover all expenses. You'vealready done a GREAT job at following up with the issue and making sure itgets through to the proper authorities as well the owner understands therole he's played and how he should take action to make sure his dog does notget out of control again. -----Original Message-----From: tabi-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:tabi-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On BehalfOf Bubba Sent: Friday, June 10, 2011 3:46 PM To: tabi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [tabi] Re: Guide Dog AttackHi, you need to take this to the news papers and go public with it. I alsowould seek legal advice. I know there is attorneys on the list and theymight give advice or take the case. I also would put in a call to WFLA FM (100.7 FM ) and get this out to the morning show. Try their number at 850-205-9352. Also see their email address below. I think this will put akick in the process and get things on track. I would also if I was the Vetthat own the business I would ban the person and his dog from my place ofbusiness. He should have went in and out the back door of the office or at least said to the Vet I have a bull dog that is a aggressive towards other animal and need to bring him or her thru the back door when it is time. I wanted all the guide dog people to know what happened toSantino and me yesterday. It is a bad story but Santino and I are both ok.I took Santino to the vet for his annual checkup and shots. While we were waiting for Dial-A-Ride in the waiting room a man came in to pick up his pit bull (or part pit bull). The dog pulled away from the man, raced across the room to Santino who was lying calmly beside my chair and viciously attackedSantino. The barking and my screams brought instant help. I could feelthat the attack dog had picked Santino up off his feet and was flinging himaround; then he nailed Santino on his back to the floor. Three vet techs had a difficult time getting the dogs jaws open so Santino would be released. One vet witnessed most of this and as soon as Santino was released took himback to check him. Praise God, the attack dog had latched onto Santino's harness right at his throat. Santino had no wounds; the vet was shocked, could hardly believe it; but he and I were and are a very shook up pair after all that. While Santino was being checked the man took his dog and left - he never said a word. Dial-A-Ride came and the driver saw the man and dog, and said he had no control of the dog and barely got him into his vehicle.I called GDB to report this and ask for advice and they said I should filea police and animal control report. The vet's office contacted Animal Control for information; however they did not file a report. They checkedFl. statutes and told me the attack dogs owner would be responsible for allcosts if Santino needed any retraining. The police tried to talk me out of filing a report saying it was not a crime; the officer who did come to take the report kind of gave theimpression it was a nuciance, and did give it an "incident report." Today Icalled Tallahassee Animal Control to inquire if a report had been filed. The woman I talked with said she was aware of the call yesterday; she wasreluctant to say if a report had or had not been filed. I was insistent; she then started to tell me what the animal control laws are; I had justread them online, and pointed out to her there were several violations. She then agreed to refer it. She called me later and said she had contacted the vet for name and address of the owner; the address was in the county so it was out of there jurisdiction; I kept pushing and she reluctantly agreed torefer it to Leon Co Animal Control, which she did. A deputy came to the house very soon after the referral and was going investigate and cite the owner. I have no doubt Leon Co. will follow up. This is all I want. I want the owners, who later called the vet and said the dog had never done anything like this before, to know there dog is a danger; I want children and other animals protected from him.Santino worked pretty well today; he is a little timid; we did not encounter any other dogs. GDB advised me to take him back to the vets office several times next week and give lots of praise and rewards so he does not associate going to the vet with the trauma. I am anxious to see how he does the nexttime we meet a stranger dog; I am sure we will have lots of work to dobefore he is back to normal. Any further thoughts or suggestions from anyof you would be appreciated.
