Hi Reginald Oduor and my dear colleagues who were present when we formed our society, i think Reginald has said it all, regarding the question of the name and the use of "disability" and "visual impairment". for I remember very well that we had a hot debate on this issue before we unanimously, for those who were there settle for the current name. however, something else i am noticing is the admission of members. I need to be reminded here Reginald, Celestina, Jimmy and Mute and those who were there during the formation of SOPVID. I thought we had put a category of our membership for both persons with disability and those who were joining us as "friends" of the society, who were sighted persons. if my memory has not elapsed, unless this was change in one of those meetings i did not attend, the SOPVID society was for professionals mostly those with a minimum of the first degree and above. forgive me if i am offending anyone, but I think we need to put things straight here. what are the qualifications of our membership so that its clear when one wants to join. if it is for everyone with visual disability, then, the word "professional" should be deleted from the name of the society to read say: "SOCIETY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITY". Please don't mistake me and think that i am againest anyone joining our society, but I am sure that our law professionals as Victor and Mute may advice accordingly, this issue of membership in an organization or society if not carefully handled may bring friction at a future date. However, as we were forming the society over ten years ago, we thoroughly debated the issue and arrived at the present name. Indeed, both "impairment" and "disability" denote a limitation. I actually think that each of us must come to terms with our limitation (disability/impairment/blindness/partial blindness), for then we shall be more confident as we interact with the world.
