Wow, you don't do things by halves (grin).
This one is a little complicated but there is a reason for what's going on.
The message "slur above" or "slur below" depends on what keystroke you used
to add the slur in the first place (S adds a slur above and SHIFT+sS adds a
slur below). If you then flip the slur, it is a flipped slur above or a
flipped slur below.
Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast way to determine whether the slur
has been flipped or not, even though there is in the case of notes.
(There's a check box in the properties window which is checked if a notes
stem is flipped, but it does nothing when a slur is selected.)
The best solution is to use ALT+LEFT ARROW or ALT+RIGHT ARROW to move
between the ancor points of the slur. When you reach the point called
"curvature" you'll be given two numbers. These are the numbers shown in the
properties window which represent the slurs curvature. Unfortunately, these
numbers make very little sense. The likely hood is that if the second
number is negative, then the slurs arc will be pointing down and if it is
positive, it will be pointing up. You should be able to deduce from this
whether you flipped the slur or not.
You should note that the X and Y coordinates of the end points will always
be zero, no matter what the flipped status is.

In my example where I'm adding items to notes, I threw in a slur.
All the stems are up in this example and the slur is spoken as being above
regardless of whether I've flipped the slurs arc. In fact, the arc of the
slur is below the noteheads which are all on low staff lines.
As a further experiment, I wrote some notes with stems down on upper
staff lines and placed a slur. Again, the slur said "slur above,"
regardless of the direction of the slur's arc. In other words, you never
hear "slur below."
