We've used the following method: when the puppy bites, SCREAM as though
you've been mortally wounded and say "No Bite!" When the puppy is startled and
releases the bite, praise the puppy immediately -- "good boy, no bite" so that
the dog learns the command "no bite." Right now the baby teeth are like little
razors, but there is not a lot of power yet. Eventually it will be the
opposite -- the puppy's jaws will get stronger and the bite will be more
forceful.
The teeth will be sharp, but not like the little needles they are now.
This exercise also teaches them to inhibit the force of their bite and if
they ever DO bite someone (hey, they are dogs, and they bite) it will hopefully
stop at a single snap and release and not turn into eight punctures.
Also, if the puppy does not calm down and continues it's rough play, playtime
is OVER. No exceptions. If they can ignore the puppy and he settles down
for a nap or quiet rest, that's great....but if they get out of control then
they need to go into their crate for a little peace and quiet. If that is the
case, they should just put the puppy in gently, without a reprimand at this
young age.
