I have a question. Other herding breeds have long coats - rough Collies, OESs, Shelties, Belgian Sheepdogs and Tervs, Puli (corded?), Briards to name a few. What makes them suitable as herding breeds and not the long coated GSDs? I assume numerous herding dogs, regardless of breed, have briars, brambles, snow and mud to deal with.
