Propaganda...lies...latest bulletins? I consider it AKC's position on
pending legislation. I happen to disagree as do throngs of other
knowledgeable dog people...but like Carmen has said...if you disagree you
don't always get a divorce.
Breeders, handlers who sell dogs, and rescues will be involved and not in a
good way. Too many very learned people are writing very learned opinions
after reading the proposed legislation that spell such situations out in
black and white...not shades of gray.
If you believe PAWS is a good thing...support it...but support it with good
facts rather than undignified rhetoric.
Several of us will be at Jim Holt's Q & A at a local AB show this weekend. I
am going armed with specific questions that will help me sort this out.
Let me give you a scenario...If you co-bred a litter with your co-owner on
their property...went down and made your picks...had a handler broker a sale
to his client...you and the handler would all fall under the auspices of the
USDA. You would be required to get a USDA license and live up to all of the
AWA provisions. You don't need to sell 26 dogs or breed 7 litters. If you
raise dogs and birds...breed 2 litters, sell 8 dogs, and 1 bird for $501 you
also qualify to be regulated by USDA.
PAWS was written with generous help from HSUS as well as other ARO's...but
the new twist is...it does contain AKC wording from the failed PPA
alternative of 2000. I cannot fathom any relationship between AKC and the
ARO's at all. This bill doesn't address puppy mills but it does address you
as a hobby breeder. I guess the way it's written it says...if you're a
breeder and you don't do it the way PAWS says...you're a puppy mill.
If it does pass...the law suits will be endless with the ARO's doing their
damnest to lower the 6-25 number and more on changing the definitions as
spelled out in PAWS.
A supporting position for PAWS is a position to doom breeding and the sport
of showing dogs as we know it.
