Pat, I was one of the lucky ones, too. I was given the choice of 11
pups and chose Moxie. She was a winner over all of her siblings and
some others at a match, then I was hooked. I knew NOTHING about GSDs,
the show ring or breeding. But Jim and I had fun. We showed her when
she was all gangly (I did the honors) when she had 3 hairs, and was
talked into sending her across country to be shown. (I flew out one
day, and brought her home... didn't like what was happening). The she
started winning, and winning and winning. Got her CDX (and CGC and
played at herding and lure coursing all at the same time). Then Bred
her to a great stud... and the litter did produce one Champion (not
owned by me... a coat). But she hated the rings, all of them. So she
was just Moxie in the House.

But then my luck held and bred her litter sister (who won her one
point, but wouldn't make it in the ring, and I knew it... she was my
son's dog) And had the most beautiful litter ever seen. I got my
futurity wins, Mex. GVx, Majors and Major Reserves... they were just
flying at me.

Life and age intervened.... But I have wonderful memories and KNOW
that I was purely and simply LUCKY.

Breeder who have breeding for years and consitently, with their lines,
win in all rings know what they heck they are doing. Sure, luck plays
into it - but behind the luck is hard work, knowledge and persistence
in developing their lines into their image of what they want the GSD
to be.

I am the very rare newbie. And I know it. Take it one step at a time.
And know that everyone sees things (dogs) with their own eyes. If you
purchased your pup because you wanted a great GSD - I suspect you got
that. If you purchased his to be a top notch show dog-that's hard to
do! When they come out of mama-wet-you can see form. You can put them
in he show ring 2 years later-and they can hate it.

It took a year of looking to find my foundation bitch. Lots of
learning and listening along the way. Had I not listened to mentors
I'd have screwed up!

Hang in there. It's a super breed and my take on those idiots bad
mouthing GSD's is they are either jealous or stupid. I'll be nice-
they need more special high intensity training

Sara,
I'm a newbie too-but a lucky one! I've had German Shepherds for 8
years, got into showing by accident. My first show pup was an
extremely sweet and special one. If you looked at the breed standard -
he didn't quite "fit". He was longer than a freight train-but
everything else was super. He didn't have a name handler. Generally jr
handlers-that we're very talented - and finally Ross Farrell started
handling him. Spunky became 8X BISS Sel Ch Konigin's Phantom of the
Opera. I was extremely lucky When he was shown-he was the best dog
on that particular day! I now have his son, and grandsons. His son is
Ch Konigin's Storms A' Brewing.

So-a newbie thats blessed with some sp
