I wouldn't be so hostile about the questions, it just confirms what has
already been said about show style exhibitors. And it's useless to pretend we
have not, at some point on this list, accused breeders of the same things that
are bring pointed out, mainly breeding racy dogs that are not correct. I used
to be anti American show breeder/AKC/Ed Frawley/ shepherd purist hater. I was
indoctrinated in the evils of what showing has done for the breed, how the AKC
standard has deviated from the SV standard, how the SV made the world in three
days...
And it is very confusing how we get such different dogs from one standard, so
different that there is an outcry for us to stop calling our dogs German
shepherds, and call them American shepherds.
Someone finally, with a level head, explained to me that when the standard is
translated word for word, from German to English, there is very little
deviation, except in places where the translation cannot be exact.

This is about as well as I have seen this topic discussed (standard for the
GSD, which is interpreted different (called style). And it is very confusing
seeing an American Standard vs East German or Czek.

There is only one BReed standard for the GSD, which is interpreted different
(called style) by
whatever group is in at the SV that year or the breeders at AKC/CKC
The Breed ring, whether German or American is used to determine whether a
dog/bitch is within
the standard.
A dog can be within the standard and not finish, or do well in the ring. A
ribbon in an adult class
at AKC/CKC shows shows that the dog is within the Breed standard. A rating at
a German
style show (the higher the better the dog is within the standard) shows that a
an animal is within
the standard.
The animal can be within the standard, but have some minor faults and not do
well in any show
ring
To me a pet is any animal that is loved - whether it is within the standard or
not
The breed standard and showing in cofrmation to prove it go hand in hand.
A dog shown in performance shows mind - it does not have to be within the breed
standard to
work. However, those dogs bred to the whatever style of the standard have
better form and
hence better function.
REgina's dogs are fantastic working animals. There are two styles of German
imports -
showlines which put more emphasis on the breed standard, and working lines
which put more
emphasis on the mind than the body. Both are usually within the standard, but
are different
styles, interpretations, of the GSD.
I am happy we have the right to select the style that we want that meets are
needs and likes
and dislikes.
