You know, I understand the idea behind this is to increase entries and
interest in the Futurities. But I don't think this is going to make a
piddly damn bit of difference. If our judges are judging handlers then we
need to pick better judges that judge dogs. That... will increase entries.
The Futurities were big when they weren't as important. Once they became so
important (ranking stud dogs based on Futurities and exhibiting those dogs
at the National), then handlers started charging more and people started
flying all over the country with every littermate instead of staying home
and showing them all in the local Futurity. And no, I don't think the
answer is to make people show in their local Futurity, that's too
complicated and can be unfair to someone who buys a dog from out of the
area, and other scenarios.

We also need to publish in the Review the Top 10 AKC point winning
producers, and invite THOSE dogs to the National, after all, that's the
goal isn't it? Our breeding programs are evaluated by the Champions not
Futurity winners (some of which don't ever finish their Championships). And
please don't tell me that these dogs are in the Red Book. That's nice but
it's not the Review and the National.

And while we're at it let's make it mandatory that every breeding a dog or
bitch has be public in order to compete for top 10. We should be able to
look up a stud dog and see every bitch that he has bred. We should be able
to know if those 5 Champions he sired came from one litter or ten.

I know many have been saying this for years. But it still never happens and
we just try to put band aids on a gaping wound.

JMHO,
Ken
