Proponents of critical analysis within the visual arts have commented on the difference between the square and the rectangle. The square objectifies it is argued, whereas the rectangle provides more of a context. I have seen several Sidibé (from Mali) square photographs, others close to square and other with rectangular cropping, all taken with his Rolleiflex and I could write similar from other Rollei TLR photographers.
