    I don't know why Ilford has this caution, it makes no 
sense. The only reason I think might apply is that Ilford 
stop bath is citric acid rather than acetic acid and citric 
is not compatible wtih white alum being a sequestering agent 
for it. I think that just reduces the efficiency of the 
hardener. They may have gone from trying to say that 
hardener is not needed to saying to never use it. It would 
be nice if there was a clarification somewhere.
