Thank you, Don. You were trying so hard to be helpful but I fear you are far off the mark.

MY COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THAT A DIGITAL CAMERA HAS BEEN CONNECTED. My wife's computer is almost completely identical to mine but does not have this problem. This is true of every digital camera which I have attempted to connect over the past six years. So your suggestions about using Windows Explorer or what to do "after you download files" don't have a lot of applicability as I never get close to that point.

The problem seems beyond ken or correction, so the workaround is either to use only SD Type 1 cards (we already have an SD1 card reader) or to get a Type 2 card reader. These are more expensive than the ones for SD Type 1 but not as much so as had seemed to be the case yesterday.
