Yes, the leather must be removed first. It comes off easy. And it is easy to glue it back on place. I used a microphone attached to the sound card of my computer. Then recorded those speeds slower than 1/30th. There are many sound editing programs out there that record a wave of sound. It's quite simple and effective. However, I'd like to give the lighter-fluid method a shot. I took a look at the file and, yes, it is huge, and I found the right pages.
