The motor tube only needs to be long enough to be stably mounted in the rocket, and to properly hold the motor casing centered in the rocket. Beyond that, it's really just excess weight.

That having been said, make absolutely sure you have a thermal blanket between the hot motor casing and any potentially meltable recovery components (i.e., nylon shock cord or nylon parachute).

That's what I'm thinking, too. Ok, one final question. What is the general consensus on motor casings being longer than the motor tube? Is it safe to use a motor that is, say 19.5" long, in a motor tube that is only 10" long considering the CP is aft of the CG?
