If you want separate volume, pan, and processing control on each take, then yes.
If you are happy with the setting per given track, then you can record in sound on sound blend mode, but just don't turn on track layers.
Any recordings recorded on one track then can be treated as one recording, every time you record again, no matter whether it's on one track or not, it's considered a clip.
I oftenrecord multiple clips or takes on a single track, then bounce them down to one clip, but this is different than using track layers.
If you want to treat each recording differently, then use another track, it doesn't matter how many,this is the way for us, and I do have projects that do have a hundred tracks on them, not very many but I do have some,
