is a suspended hub a possible solution?
http://www.pantourhub.com/products.html
maybe a little bit expensive and not much of a challenge for a homebuilder.

is there anyone on the list who has some experience with this kind of hub?

i don't think a suspension done this way would bring much effort.
moving the rear suspension a bit towards the steering pivot should
have pretty much the same effect... not to forget that your feet
were part of the unsuspensed frontend "jumping" with every bump.

the double fork seems to be the better solution but might cause less
chain pull (and a nicer suspension characteristic) with the pivot near
the bb similar to the flevo front suspension. but it will decrease
weight and complexity much more than the first solution wich is a bit
against the philosophy of this type of bike.
